Chapter 9 - THE BLACKMAIL LETTER

"Run, Evelyn! Get the black book on her desk!" Marcus shouted as he wrestled Victoria for the weapon.
Evelyn leaped across the desk, scattering documents everywhere.
Her eyes locked onto a heavy leather-bound journal stamped with a golden crest.
She grabbed the book and clutched it against her chest.
Victoria bit Marcus’s arm and screamed for the house guards.
Heavy footsteps began pounding up the stairwell outside the study.
"Go out through the balcony!" Marcus yelled, pinning Victoria against the wall.
"I'm not leaving you behind!" Evelyn shouted.
"If you stay, neither of us saves your baby!" Marcus roared back.
Evelyn grit her teeth, turned, and bolted toward the balcony doors.
She kicked the glass doors open and stepped into the pouring rain.
The night air was freezing, but her blood was boiling with adrenaline.
She looked down at the courtyard two stories below.
A large delivery truck loaded with hay bales was parked directly beneath the ledge.
The study door burst open, and three armed security guards flooded into the room.

"Shoot her!" Victoria shrieked from the floor.
Evelyn took a deep breath and jumped into the dark abyss.
