Chapter 14 - THE COURTROOM PREPARATION
"Stop!" Evelyn screamed with everything she had left in her lungs.
The two men turned around in surprise, holding the bassinet suspended in mid-air.
"Get away from that baby!" Evelyn yelled, stumbling through the open gate.
One of the men pulled out a radio. "We have a intruder at the loading dock."
Before he could finish, a sleek silver sports car pulled into the alleyway, blocking the van.
The driver's side door opened, and a woman in an expensive tailored suit stepped out.
It was Clara Vance—the head prosecutor of the city and Doctor Vance's estranged sister.
"That's enough," Clara said, holding up a federal warrant.
"State Police are right behind me," Clara announced coldly.
The two men dropped their hands, looking terrified.
Evelyn ran past them and lifted the blanket covering the bassinet.
Inside lay a tiny infant with pale skin and a small birthmark behind his left ear.
It was her real son.
Evelyn collapsed to her knees, pulling the crying infant to her chest and sobbing hysterically.
"I found you... Mommy found you," she wept, kissing his forehead over and over.
Clara walked over and looked down at Evelyn with a solemn expression.

"This is only half the battle, Evelyn," Clara said quietly.
"Julian has already filed emergency court papers to declare you unfit and strip your rights forever," Clara warned.
