Chapter 7 - THE SECOND TRAP
Marcus led Evelyn through the hidden servant passages inside the estate walls.
The air was damp and smelled of old stone and dust.
They reached the hidden door behind the bookshelf in Victoria’s private study.
Marcus pressed a mechanism, and the door slid open an inch.
Evelyn peeked through the crack into the dimly lit room.
Victoria was sitting at her mahogany desk, arguing furiously on the phone.
"I told you to dispose of the medical records, not keep them in the vault!" Victoria shouted into the receiver.
"If Julian finds out the child in the nursery isn't his biological son, we both go to prison!" she snapped.
Evelyn gasped loudly, unable to control her reaction.
Victoria froze instantly and turned her head toward the bookshelf.
"Who's there?" Victoria demanded, pulling a small silver pistol from her drawer.
Marcus pushed Evelyn behind him and stepped into the room.
"It's just me, Madam Victoria," Marcus said calmly, raising his hands.
"Marcus... what are you doing in my private quarters?" Victoria asked, her eyes narrowing.
"I caught Evelyn trying to escape," Marcus lied seamlessly.

Victoria's gaze landed on Evelyn, and a cruel smile spread across her face.
