Chapter 10 - INTO THE SHADOWS
Evelyn slammed hard into the damp hay bales, the impact knocking the wind out of her lungs.
Pain shot through her ribs, but she forced herself to move.
Shouts echoed from the balcony above as flashlight beams cut through the rainy darkness.
"Find her! Search the grounds!" Julian’s voice boomed over the estate intercom system.
Evelyn scrambled out of the truck and stayed low to the ground.
She sprinted into the surrounding forest, the sharp branches scratching her arms and face.
She didn't stop running until the bright lights of the mansion faded into the distance.
Soaked and shivering, she collapsed against the trunk of a massive oak tree.
She opened the leather journal she had taken from Victoria's desk.
Using the faint light of her stolen phone, she flipped through the pages.
The pages were filled with names, dates, and offshore account numbers.
On page 42, she found a handwritten entry that made her heart stop beating.
Subject: Newborn Boy. Transfer Location: Saint Jude Orphanage, Sector 4.
