Chapter 13 - THE BETRAYAL AT DAWN

The car swerved wildly across the wet lanes and crashed into a highway guardrail.

The airbag deployed with a violent crash, blinding Evelyn momentarily.

Smoke poured from the crumpled hood of the vehicle.

Evelyn coughed through the dust, her head spinning from the impact.

The driver was knocked unconscious, his head resting against the steering wheel.

Evelyn forced her door open and fell onto the cold asphalt.

She grabbed the leather journal from the floorboard and dragged herself up.

The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon, painting the sky in pale shades of orange.

She was less than a mile away from the district where the orphanage was located.

Ignoring the agonizing pain in her ankle, she began to limp down the road.

Every step felt like walking on broken glass.

She could hear the distant wail of police sirens approaching the crash site behind her.

She didn't know if the police were coming to help her or if Julian had bribed them too.

She reached the iron gates of Saint Jude Orphanage just as a black van backed up to the rear entrance.

Two men in dark suits were carrying a small covered bassinet toward the back doors of the van.
