Chapter 1 - The Landing

"She came at me!" Vanessa screamed, her pitch shredding the church-like silence of the Howard estate’s grand foyer. "You all saw it! She tried to kill me!"
Elena didn’t make a sound. She lay sprawled across the bottom landing of the double-curved mahogany staircase, her cheek pressed flat against the freezing Italian marble. Her breath hitched in ragged, shallow gasps. Her right hand clutched the heavy wool of her oversized beige cardigan, guarding the gentle curve of her seven-month pregnant belly.
Above her, Vanessa stood four steps down from the second-floor gallery, trembling theatrically in the arms of Evelyn Howard, the family matriarch. Vanessa's knuckles were white as she gripped the older woman’s silk dressing gown, tears painting shiny streaks through her contour.
"I just pushed her away," Vanessa sobbed, looking down at Elena with wide, horrified eyes that held an undeniable spark of victory. "She lunged at me, Evelyn! She’s insane. She wants Julian's trust fund, she wants this house—she’s been trying to destroy this family since the day she tricked him into putting a ring on her finger!"
Evelyn Howard stared down at her daughter-in-law. Her eyes were wide with panic, but her feet stayed planted. She didn't move an inch toward the stairs. She didn’t call for help. She didn't even tell the house staff to bring a towel.
To anyone watching, Elena was broken, helpless, and bleeding out on the cold floor.
Underneath the thick hem of her cardigan, Elena’s thumb slid across the cracked glass of her phone. One swipe. Two taps. Speed dial one.
A subtle vibration buzzed against her ribcage. The call connected.
Elena shielded her mouth with her trembling fingers, leaning her head into the curve of her shoulder. Her terrified expression vanished entirely, replaced by a gaze as sharp and cold as shaved ice.
"Detective Ruiz," Elena whispered, her voice barely a thread through the phone line. "She did it. Send the units now."

She hung up, let her eyes flutter shut, and went limp.
The fall had been brutal, bruising, and agonizingly real. But so was the trap. And Vanessa had just stepped straight into the center of the steel teeth.
