Chapter 17 - THE SHADOW IN THE NURSERY

Evelyn stepped out of the car carrying her baby, wrapped safely in a clean blanket.
She was covered in bruises, her dress was torn, and blood was dried on her arms.
Yet, she walked up the grand stone steps of the courthouse like a queen walking to her throne.
Clara walked right beside her, holding the leather journal and legal documents.
They pushed open the massive brass doors of Courtroom 402.
Inside, Julian was sitting at the plaintiff’s table, smiling warmly at the judge.
Next to him sat Doctor Vance and a high-priced team of legal defense attorneys.
In the front row of the gallery sat Victoria Sterling, looking perfectly composed in a pearl necklace.
The judge was holding a pen, poised to sign the custody transfer order.
"Stop the proceedings, Your Honor!" Clara's voice echoed through the courtroom like thunder.
Julian turned his head slowly, expecting to see a defeated woman.

When his eyes landed on Evelyn holding her real baby, his face turned deathly pale.
The pen in the judge's hand froze millimeters above the paper.
