Chapter 2 - LOCK AND KEY

Evelyn thrashed against the grip of the guards, but her weak body gave out.

"Let me go!" she shrieked as they dragged her across the marble floor.

Julian turned his back on her, shielding the baby from her view.

"Take her to the East Wing guest room and lock the door," Julian ordered harshly.

"Julian, you cannot lock the mother of your child away like a prisoner!" Victoria protested.

"I am protecting my heir from a dangerous woman," Julian snapped back.

The heavy mahogany doors of the ballroom slammed shut behind Evelyn.

The guards shoved her into a cold, dark room on the upper floor.

The key turned in the lock with a definitive, chilling click.

Evelyn collapsed onto the carpet, pressing her face into her hands.

Her entire body shook with uncontrollable sobs.

She could still hear the distant, faint sound of her baby crying downstairs.

She dragged herself toward the locked door and pounded her fists against the wood.

"Julian! Open this door!" she screamed until her throat burned.

Silence was her only answer.

She leaned her forehead against the cold wood, gasping for breath.

Then, she heard soft footsteps approaching from outside the hallway.

A small piece of paper was slid silently under the door.

Evelyn picked it up with trembling fingers and read the handwritten note: Do not trust Victoria.
