Chapter 14 - The Shot in the Dark
Elena immediately shielded her daughter with her own body.
She turned her back to Victoria, bracing for the inevitable gunshot.
The deafening sound of a gun discharging echoed through the warehouse.
Elena closed her eyes tight, waiting for the piercing pain.
Instead, a loud groan echoed behind her, followed by a heavy thud.
Elena turned around slowly, her body trembling uncontrollably.
Victoria was lying on the concrete floor, clutching her bleeding shoulder.
Standing behind her was the head attorney who had served the court order earlier.
He was holding a smoking firearm in his steady, trembling hand.
Elena stared at him in complete and utter bewilderment.
"Why... why did you shoot her?" Elena stammered out.
The attorney lowered his weapon and let out a long, heavy sigh.
"She ordered me to eliminate the child after securing the funds," he revealed.
"I am a corrupt lawyer, Elena, but I am not a murderer of children."
He threw a thick folder of original legal documents onto the ground.
"These are the true custody papers and the real blood test results," he said.
"They prove beyond any doubt that you are her biological mother."
Elena collapsed onto her knees, clutching her daughter and the documents tight.
