Chapter 5 - The Underground Clinic

Rain began to pour over the dark alleyways of Queens.

Gabriel held Mia tight against his chest.

Her skin was growing colder by the minute.

Bruno trotted ahead, clearing the path through the shadow-drenched city.

They reached an unmarked basement door beneath a closed pharmacy.

This was Doc Vance’s off-grid clinic.

Gabriel kicked the metal door twice, then three times.

A small slit opened on the door.

A pair of tired, bloodshot eyes peered out.

"Gabriel?" the old doctor gasped.

"She’s alive, Doc," Gabriel said, pushing his way inside.

"Fix her now."

Doc Vance rushed to clear a stainless-steel operating table.

Gabriel placed Mia down gently.

Bruno sat right beside the table, resting his chin near Mia’s hand.

Doc Vance hooked up a cardiac monitor.

A slow, erratic beep filled the small room.

"Her vitals are crashing," Doc Vance said, his hands shaking.

"The drug in her system is a synthetic neurotoxin."

"It slows the heart to near zero to fake brain death."

"If we don't administer the neutralizer, her organs will shut down in two hours."

Gabriel grabbed the doctor by his collar.

"Do you have the neutralizer?" Gabriel asked coldly.

"No," Doc Vance swallowed hard.
