Chapter 4 - Buried Truths

The impact flipped the armored vehicle onto its side.

Sparks flew across the pavement.

Glass shattered into thousands of tiny crystals.

Gabriel’s vision blurred as smoke filled the cabin.

He checked his arms first.

Mia was still cradled safely against his chest.

She was breathing, though her pulse was growing weaker.

Bruno barked wildly from the rear compartment.

The dog kicked against the bent emergency door.

The door burst open, and Bruno dragged Gabriel out by his collar.

Outside, three masked gunmen approached the wreck.

They carried suppressed submachine guns.

"Secure the girl!" one shooter barked.

Bruno charged without hesitation.

He slammed into the lead shooter, taking him to the ground.

Gabriel pulled his sidearm and fired three precise shots.

The remaining attackers fell.

Gabriel pulled a dying Marco out of the wreckage by his collar.

"Who ordered the hit on my daughter?" Gabriel demanded.

Marco coughed up blood, grinning weakly.

"Look at your own inner circle, Gabriel..."

"The order didn't come from outside."

"It came from home."

Marco gasped his last breath and went limp.

Gabriel stood alone in the dark alley, holding his daughter.

He couldn't trust his lieutenants.

He couldn't trust his doctors.

The only creature he could trust was standing beside him, covered in blood.

Gabriel looked down at Bruno.

"Find us a safe house, boy."
