Chapter 10 - Race Against Death

Gabriel smashed his foot against the accelerator of his vehicle.
The car roared through the rain-slick streets of New York.
Red lights meant nothing.
Traffic meant nothing.
"Keep doing CPR!" Gabriel yelled into the speakerphone.
"I have the antidote!"
"She doesn't have time, Gabriel!" Doc Vance shouted.
"Her pupils are dilated!"
"Bruno is losing his mind down here!"
In the background, Gabriel could hear Bruno’s frantic, booming barks.
The dog was whining, pawing frantically at the medical equipment.
Gabriel pulled up to the pharmacy alley, drifting the car sideways.
He slammed into the wall, jumped out, and kicked the basement door open.
He rushed into the medical room.
Mia lay lifeless on the table.
The cardiac monitor showed a flat, continuous line.
Doc Vance was desperately pumping her tiny chest.
Bruno was standing on his hind legs, resting his head on Mia’s cheek, whimpering softly.
"Get out of the way!" Gabriel barked.
Gabriel opened the armored case and pulled out a syringe.
He uncapped the needle with his teeth.
Without hesitating, he drove the long needle directly into his daughter’s chest.
He injected the blue antidote straight into her heart.
The room fell completely silent.
Only the steady, monotone hum of the flatline monitor filled the air.
Gabriel stared at his daughter's pale, motionless face.

"Come back to me, baby girl," Gabriel whispered.
"Please."
