Chapter 20 - The Final Track
Gabriel stood in the middle of the ruined room, his breath ragged.
On the floor lay a small gold necklace Mia had been wearing.
Next to it was a hand-written note pinned to the wall with a scalp.
Gabriel walked slowly toward the wall and pulled the note down.
The note read:
"If you want your daughter back alive, bring your family's ledger to the docks at midnight."
"Come alone. If the dog barks, she dies."
Gabriel crumpled the note tightly in his fist.
His eyes burned with an icy, terrifying fury.
He turned toward Bruno, who was sniffing the floor intensely near the back exit door.
Bruno picked up a scent and let out a single, low whine.
The dog looked up at Gabriel, his dark eyes filled with absolute determination.
Gabriel loaded a fresh magazine into his pistol and chambered a round with a sharp clack.
"They made one mistake, Bruno," Gabriel whispered softly into the empty room.
"They thought I would obey."
Gabriel looked at the loyal Rottweiler standing by the doorway.
