Chapter 9 - Midnight Hunt
Leo sped through the rain-drenched streets toward the dilapidated apartment complex where Maya lived.
The city lights blurred into streaks of red and yellow through his wet windshield.
He sprinted up five flights of concrete stairs, arriving breathless at door 5B.
He knocked frantically on the peeling wood.
"Maya! Open up! It’s Leo!" he shouted over the sound of thunder outside.
The door slowly creaked open.
Maya stood in the doorway holding a heavy metal pipe, her eyes filled with fear and exhaustion.
"Get away from me," she choked out.

"Listen to me, Maya, Marcus sent men after you!" Leo urged, stepping inside and shutting the door behind him. "You’re in danger!"
"I know I’m in danger!" Maya yelled, dropping the pipe as tears overflowed. "I’ve been in danger ever since your brother hid that evidence in my house!"
