The next evening, the high school auditorium was decorated with shimmering lights, velvet curtains, and crystal chandeliers.
Wealthy donors, city politicians, and Mayor Vance stood in formal suits, sipping champagne.
Marcus stood beside his father, wearing a tuxedo with a triumphant smile on his face.
Outside in the shadow of the parking lot, Leo and Maya put on dark maintenance uniforms they had stolen from the school laundry room.
"If we get caught inside, we go to prison forever," Maya reminded him, checking her prosthetic strap carefully.
"We won't get caught," Leo promised. "We just need to plug this flash drive into the main projector control room."
They slipped through the basement service door, avoiding the security guards patrolling the main entrances.
