Chapter 12 - Ambush in the Dark
A heavy tear gas canister bounced across the carpet, thick white smoke instantly billowing into the air.
Maya coughed violently, clutching her throat and eyes.
"Maya, grab the journal!" Leo yelled, pulling his shirt over his mouth and nose.
Heavy footsteps kicked open the front apartment door.
Three tall men dressed in black tactical gear burst through the fog, holding heavy metal batons.
"Take the girl and destroy the book!" one of the masked thugs ordered.
Leo tackled the first man into the wall, knocking the baton out of his grip.

"Run, Maya! Get to the fire escape!" Leo roared while struggling against the attacker.
Maya grabbed Julian’s black journal, threw her backpack over her shoulders, and scrambled toward the rear window.
