Chapter 13 - The Rooftop Chase
Maya dragged herself onto the rusting fire escape as heavy rain lashed down against her skin.
Her prosthetic leg slipped on the wet metal rungs, sending a violent jolt of pain up her thigh.
Behind her, she heard the sound of glass breaking and Leo groaning in pain as he fought off the thugs inside.
"I can't leave him!" Maya muttered to herself.
She reached into her pocket, pulled out a small emergency flare Julian had given her, and struck it against the brick wall.
A brilliant red flame erupted, filling the alleyway with thick smoke and blinding light.
She tossed the flare right back into the open apartment window.
A scream echoed from inside as the thugs stumbled back from the blinding light.

Leo broke free from their grip and threw himself out the window onto the fire escape beside Maya.
"We have to jump to the next roof!" Leo panted, blood trickling from a cut above his left eyebrow.
