Chapter 3 - The Broken Promise

Maya managed to retrieve her ruined notebook, her fingers bleeding from paper cuts.
She struggled to stand up, her prosthetic leg clicking awkwardly against the polished floor.
"I don't need your help, Leo," she whispered through gritted teeth.
She snatched the photo of Julian out of his hand before he could stop her.
"Wait!" Leo begged, reaching for her shoulder. "Julian is my brother! He’s been missing for three years!"
"I know who he is," Maya said, her eyes burning with a mix of hatred and pity. "And he told me what you did to him."
Leo froze as if struck by lightning.
"What I did?" Leo stammered, his mind racing into total confusion. "I didn't do anything!"
Maya turned around without another word, limping as fast as she could down the long corridor.
The crowd burst into another chorus of taunts, throwing crumpled paper at her back.
Leo stood frozen in the middle of the hallway, surrounded by dozens of glaring phone cameras.
