Chapter 9 - A DESPERATE ESCAPE

Detective Vance pulled the trigger back slightly, his finger steady.

Eleanor knew she had only a fraction of a second to act.

She reached into her coat pocket and grabbed a handful of sharp, jagged ash and glass.

With all her remaining strength, she flung the debris directly into Vance’s eyes.

Vance screamed in agony as the stinging powder blinded him.

He fired a shot wildly into the air.

BANG!

The loud gunshot echoed off the decaying concrete walls.

Eleanor sprinted sideways and threw herself through a shattered window frame.

Sharp glass sliced into her arms, but she barely felt the pain through her adrenaline.

She hit the muddy ground outside and scrambled to her feet.

"Shoot her!" Richard shouted from inside the burning structure.

Vance stumbled out into the rain, rubbing his eyes frantically and firing blindly.

Bullets tore through the heavy downpour, missing Eleanor by inches.

Eleanor sprinted into the surrounding woods, keeping low to the ground.

She didn't stop running until the sound of shouts and gunshots faded behind her.

She collapsed against a tree, gasping for air, the confidential files still clutched in her hands.

She had survived the encounter, but her time was rapidly running out.
