Chapter 7 - THE SECRET EVIDENCE

Eleanor waited in the shadows until the two guards walked past her position.
She slipped quietly into the remains of the master study.
The ceiling above had completely caved in, leaving the room open to the night sky.
In the far corner sat the heavy steel safe, scorched black by the flames.
The lock mechanism was severely damaged, but the heavy door was slightly ajar.
The heat had warped the metal frame, preventing it from shutting completely.
Eleanor jammed her small hands into the narrow gap of the safe door.
She pulled with all her strength, her muscles screaming in pain.
With a loud screeching sound of metal, the door swung open.
Inside, wrapped in a fireproof leather pouch, were several legal documents.
Eleanor pulled out the documents and opened them quickly under her small flashlight.
It was not just the will.
It was a contract signed by Richard Sterling hiring an outside arsonist.
The document detailed an advance payment to set the mansion on fire from the inside.
Eleanor’s hand trembled so violently she nearly dropped the papers.
"They didn't just plan this," Eleanor whispered in shock.
May you like
"They bought the fire."
Suddenly, the heavy click of a gun being cocked sounded right behind her head.
