Chapter 14 - INTO THE SPIDER'S WEB

The taxi pulled up a block away from Pier 42.
The harbor was shrouded in thick fog, the ocean waves crashing against the wooden docks.
Eleanor stepped out onto the damp pavement and approached the dark structure.
A single light illuminated the wide metal entrance of Warehouse 42.
She crept alongside the building until she found a narrow side door left slightly cracked.
She slipped inside, her heart pounding against her ribs like a sledgehammer.
The air inside smelled strongly of saltwater, gasoline, and rust.
High above on the metal catwalk, she spotted a small figure tied to a wooden chair.
It was seven-year-old Leo, mouth covered with heavy duct tape.
His small legs were trembling as tears streaked down his dirty cheeks.
Eleanor’s heart shattered at the sight.
"Leo," she whispered silently, stepping closer toward the stairs.
