Chapter 20 - JUSTICE IN THE DARK

"It's over now, Victoria!" Eleanor shouted, slamming the heavy wooden door open.
Richard turned around in shock, his face going pale.
"How are you still alive?!" Richard gasped, stepping back.
Eleanor didn't answer.
She rushed straight to the IV stand and ripped the needle out of Arthur’s arm.
"Stop her!" Victoria screamed, lunging forward with her nails bared.
Eleanor ducked, grabbed a heavy metal tray from the medical cart, and swung it hard.
CLANG!
The tray struck Victoria across the face, sending her crashing against the wall.
Richard drew a small knife from his pocket and charged at Eleanor in a rage.
"I will destroy you!" Richard roared.
Before he could reach her, the room's doors were kicked wide open.
"POLICE! HANDS IN THE AIR!" a booming voice echoed through the hallway.
Dozens of armed police officers flooded into the room, led by an internal affairs investigator.
Behind them walked Officer Miller, holding a bloody bandage against his chest.
He had survived the gunshot thanks to his heavy Kevlar vest.
"It's over, Sterling," Miller said weakly, holding up a recorder.
"We tapped your phone lines three hours ago."
"We heard every single word."
Richard dropped the knife, his hands trembling as officers wrestled him to the floor.
Victoria sobbed hysterically as handcuffs were clicked around her wrists.
Eleanor fell to her knees beside Arthur’s bed, wrapping her arms around the weak boy.
Arthur opened his hazel eyes slowly, looking up at her with a gentle, hopeful smile.
"I knew you'd come back for me, Eleanor," Arthur whispered weakly.

Eleanor held him tight, tears of relief falling down her face.
The dark nightmare was finally over.
