Chapter 6 - INSIDE THE BURNT RUINS
By 3:00 AM, the rain was falling heavily over the city.
Eleanor wore a dark raincoat and pulled the hood low over her face.
She slipped through the broken iron gates of the Sterling estate.
The grand mansion was now nothing more than a blackened skeleton.
Smoke still rose faintly from the charred wooden beams.
Police tape surrounded the entire perimeter.
Eleanor ducked under the yellow tape and stepped onto the ruined grounds.
Every step she took crunched on broken glass and ash.
She needed to reach Richard’s underground safe in the study.
That safe held the original copy of Arthur’s mother’s last will.
If Eleanor could retrieve that document, she could expose their motive to the public.
Suddenly, the beam of a flashlight cut through the dark corridor ahead.
Eleanor pressed her back against a burnt brick wall.
"Did you double-check the safe?" a heavy male voice asked inside the ruins.
It was not the police.
It was one of Richard’s private security guards.
"Mr. Sterling said to burn whatever files survived," another guard replied.
