Chapter 18 - RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK

"Leo, look at me! Look at me!" Eleanor whispered urgently, tearing the tape from his lips.
"Eleanor! I was so scared!" Leo sobbed, gasping for air.
Eleanor examined the device under the chair.
It was not an explosive bomb; it was an electronic timer wired to an acid-vial lock.
When the timer hit zero, the acid would dissolve the heavy steel cable holding the overhead crane load above the platform.
The massive steel crates would collapse right onto the catwalk.
"Stay still, Leo," Eleanor said, her fingers trembling violently.
She looked around frantically for a tool.
She spotted the dropped pistol lying on the metal grating.
Using the heavy steel butt of the gun, she smashed the digital display of the timer.
The wires sparked furiously, short-circuiting the mechanism.
The ticking stopped instantly, freezing the clock at 03:12.
Eleanor quickly untied the thick ropes around Leo’s wrists and ankles.
She pulled her little brother into a tight, desperate embrace.

"You're safe now," Eleanor sobbed into his hair.
"Now we have to save Arthur."
