Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Dark

Rain poured heavily against the tall glass windows of the mansion.
Evelyn sat beside Lily’s bed, gently stroking her hair.
The little girl was finally asleep.
A soft knock sounded at the bedroom door.
It was Julian, Victoria’s chief butler and trusted confidant.
"Madam Victoria wishes to see you in the study," Julian said softly.
Evelyn stood up, her jaw set tight.
She walked down the long, dimly lit corridor.
Portraits of the ancient family line seemed to watch her every step.
She pushed open the heavy oak doors of the study.
Victoria sat behind a massive wooden desk, holding a glass of amber liquid.
"You embarrassed us tonight, Evelyn," Victoria said, not looking up.
"He laid his hands on my daughter," Evelyn replied coldly.
"He is the son of our primary investor," Victoria spat, turning her gaze.
"I don't care who his father is," Evelyn said.
