Chapter 7 - Signals in the Dark

The unbearable sound echoed off the metal walls of the diner.
The bikers covered their ears, groaning in agony.
Thomas winced, taking a step back toward the exit.
"Turn it off!" Thomas shouted to someone outside through a radio mic on his wrist.
"The frequency is too high!"
Jax ignored the blinding pain in his ears and lunged forward.
He scooped up the little boy with one arm and grabbed the folded paper with the other.
"Martha, move!" Jax yelled.
Martha didn't hesitate.
She kicked open the wooden door behind the counter leading to the kitchen.
Jax scrambled over the shattered counter, glass digging into his boots.
A gunshot shattered the remaining neon sign outside.
A bullet slammed into the wood right where Jax had been standing a second before.
They burst into the dark kitchen, smelling of old fry grease and bleach.
Jax slammed the heavy metal door shut and threw the deadbolt.
The high-pitched noise suddenly cut out.
In the sudden silence, the boy gasped for air in Jax's arms.
"They're coming," the boy whimpered.
May you like
"Uncle isn't in the van."
"He's inside the walls."
