Chapter 21 - The Knocking Below
The rhythmic pounding against the concrete floor grew louder and heavier.
THUD. THUD. THUD.
Jax stared at the cracking pavement between his boots as dust vibrated off the stone.
"What is that?" Jax demanded, holding his breath as the silence in the courtyard stretched thin.
Marcus clutched his damaged hydraulic shoulder, blue fluid dripping onto his leather suit.
"That's not a person knocking, Jax," Marcus rasped, his lone human eye wide with terror.
"That's the pressure relief system failing."
Up in the control tower, Governor Vance's face turned ghost-pale.
"Get out of there!" Vance screamed over the intercom to his guards. "The subterranean seals are giving way!"
The guards on the catwalks immediately broke formation, scrambling toward the fire escapes in pure panic.
"Thomas, what did you do?!" Vance roared, grabbing Thomas by his collar.
"I didn't do anything!" Thomas stammered, backing away from the reinforced window. "The demolition charges were linked to the water pumps!"

A sudden, violent explosion of black water erupted through the center of the courtyard.
The concrete floor buckled upward like paper, throwing Jax and Marcus into the air.
