Chapter 14 - Bloodlines and Steel
Marcus looked down at the boy, his lone human eye softening slightly.
"You've grown, Leo," Marcus said, his voice glitching slightly on the child's name.
"Is Mom really safe?" Leo asked, tears welling up in his hazel eyes.
"She is in a safe house across the state line," Marcus replied.
"I sent Thomas on a wild chase so I could get to you."
Jax stepped between Marcus and the boy, his shock turning into boiling anger.
"You used a child as bait?!" Jax yelled, grabbing Marcus by the shoulder of his leather suit.
"You sent an eight-year-old into a diner surrounded by snipers?!"
"It was the only way to get Thomas out in the open!" Marcus snapped, shoving Jax back with unnatural, hydraulic strength.
Jax stumbled back into the stone wall.
"You've changed, Marcus," Martha said quietly from the shadows.
"You're not the boy who left this town."
"That boy died in the prison fire ten years ago, Martha," Marcus said coldly.
"Now there's only the mission."
Marcus turned his head back toward the tunnel entrance behind them.
"Thomas's men have breached the trapdoor," Marcus warned.
