Thomas stepped forward slowly, his polished dress shoes clicking on the damp stone.

"You're very predictable, Martha," Thomas said, not taking his eyes off Jax.

"You always use the coal tunnels when you get scared."

"How did you get ahead of us?" Jax asked, stepping in front of the boy.

"There are four entrances to these tunnels, Jax," Thomas replied casually.

"I built them."

Jax felt his stomach drop.

"You?" Jax asked.

"Your family thought they ran this town," Thomas smirked, raising the silenced pistol.

"They were just tenant farmers working on my family's land."

"Now, hand over the paper with the blue ink, or I put a bullet through the boy's knee."

The boy trembled, hiding entirely behind Jax’s legs.

"I don't have it," Jax lied, his hand slipping toward the knife strapped to his boot.

"Don't lie to me, boy," Thomas sneered, thumbing the safety off the gun.

Suddenly, a loud, metallic screech echoed from deep within the dark tunnel behind Thomas.
