Chapter 20 - The Final Countdown
Jax grabbed Marcus’s vest in absolute horror.
"The boy is still in the valley!" Jax screamed.
"The safe house is within the blast radius!"
"The safe house is reinforced!" Marcus yelled back over the sound of rising sirens.
"It's the only way to destroy Vance's entire network in one second!"
00:30 displayed on Marcus's wrist screen.
Up in the control tower, Governor Vance’s calm smile finally disappeared.
"Shoot them!" Vance screamed into the microphone. "Shoot them now!"
Muzzle flashes erupted from the catwalks in a blinding storm of lead.
Jax tackled Marcus behind a heavy concrete pillar as bullets chewed through the truck.
Sparks rained down on them like fireworks.

"Give me the detonator Override!" Jax roared, reaching for Marcus’s arm.
"No!" Marcus rasped, fighting back with his mechanical arm. "It has to end tonight!"
Jax drove his knife straight into the hydraulic joint of Marcus's synthetic shoulder.
Sparks and blue fluid sprayed into the air.
Marcus roared in pain as his arm went limp.
Jax ripped the wrist control unit off Marcus's arm with four seconds remaining.

Jax smashed the control unit onto the sharp edge of his steel knee-pad.
The digital screen shattered into pieces.
The red flashing lights went completely dark.
The sirens stopped.
The gunfire from the catwalks abruptly ceased in the suffocating silence.
Jax lay panting on the concrete, bloody and exhausted, looking up at the gray sky.
Dawn was beginning to break over the mountains.
