Chapter 22 - Into the Abyss

Jax crashed hard onto the jagged asphalt, the breath knocked completely out of his lungs.
The geyser of dark, oily water shot fifty feet into the early morning sky.
"Jax! Grab the crane!" Marcus yelled over the roaring torrent of water.
The ground around the subterranean block began to cave inward, creating a massive, swirling sinkhole.
Trucks, steel beams, and concrete pillars were swallowed into the black abyss below.
Jax scrambled backward, his fingers digging into the mud as the perimeter wall collapsed behind him.
He looked back and saw Marcus sliding straight toward the edge of the widening pit.
"Marcus!" Jax yelled, lunging forward and catching Marcus's organic arm just in time.
Marcus hung over the roaring void, staring down into the flooded ruins of Cell 09.
Floating amidst the debris thirty feet below was a rusted steel vault, forced open by the water pressure.
Inside the vault sat an airtight, glowing yellow emergency case.
"The ledger..." Marcus whispered, pointing down with his free hand.
"Forget the ledger! Give me your other hand!" Jax shouted, his muscles straining to pull Marcus up.

"It's not just a ledger, Jax," Marcus said coldly, looking up at his brother with a hollow expression.
"It contains the list of everyone who was replaced."
