Chapter 23 - The Doppelgänger Protocol

Jax’s grip almost slipped off Marcus's wrist.
"What do you mean 'replaced'?" Jax asked, his mind reeling.
Before Marcus could answer, a gunshot echoed from above.
A bullet struck the mud inches from Jax’s hand, throwing wet dirt into his face.
Jax looked up to see Thomas hanging from the ladder of a rising getaway helicopter.
"Shoot them both!" Thomas screamed through a megaphone to a sniper leaning out of the helicopter door.
"No one leaves this pit alive!"
The helicopter hovered directly over the sinkhole, its rotor wash whipping the rising water into a blinding mist.
"Jax, let me go!" Marcus commanded, his synthetic shoulder sparking wildly.
"If I drop, I can catch the case before it sinks into the mine shaft!"
"You'll die, you idiot!" Jax roared.
"I died ten years ago!" Marcus yelled back.
Marcus violently twisted his arm, slipping out of Jax's grip, and plummeted straight into the dark abyss.
"NO!" Jax screamed.
