Chapter 12 - Echoes in the Deep

The air in the tunnel suddenly grew freezing cold.
Jax felt the hair on his arms stand on end.
"What is that?" Martha asked, her voice shaking uncontrollably.
Thomas did not answer.
His confident demeanor vanished, replaced by an expression of genuine shock.
From the darkness behind Thomas, a beam of bright yellow light cut through the gloom.
It was the headlight of a heavy vintage motorcycle.
The engine didn't roar; it purred with an unnerving, high-pitched mechanical whine.
The rider was dressed in a worn leather jumpsuit from thirty years ago.
The helmet shield was completely blacked out.
"Impossible..." Thomas whispered, stepping back toward Jax.
"He died in the fire!"
The motorcycle accelerated down the narrow tunnel toward them at terrifying speed.
"Run!" Jax roared, grabbing the boy and shoving Martha down the dark path ahead.
Jax turned back just in time to see the motorcycle slam directly into Thomas.
The sound of shattering bones echoed through the cavern.
Thomas was thrown twenty feet down the tunnel, his gun skittering across the wet rock.

The motorcycle slid to a halt right in front of Jax.
The rider turned his blacked-out helmet slowly toward Jax.
