Chapter 13 - The Mask of Steel

Jax reached for the knife at his boot, his muscles tense.

"Who are you?" Jax shouted over the idling engine.

The rider slowly reached up with gloved hands and unlatched the heavy helmet.

The helmet slid off to reveal a face covered in intricate silver surgical scars.

Half of the man's face was synthetic, metallic plating replacing his jaw and cheekbone.

Jax stared into the one natural eye remaining on the man's face.

It was the same hazel eye as the boy standing behind him.

"Marcus...?" Jax gasped, dropping his knife to the stone floor.

"You're supposed to be dead."

"I was," Marcus spoke, his voice carrying the exact electronic rasp that had come from the child's speaker earlier.

"They rebuilt me to hunt down the ledger."

"They?" Jax asked.

"The people Thomas was working for," Marcus rasped, pointing toward Thomas’s unconscious body.

"He was just a middleman, Jax."

"The real monster is waiting at Cell 09."

The boy slowly walked up to Marcus, looking at the metal plates on his face without fear.

"Dad?" the boy asked softly.
