Chapter 15 - The Collapse
Explosions thundered above them, shaking heavy stalactites from the tunnel roof.
Dust poured down like dry snow, blinding their vision.
"Move!" Marcus commanded, revving his motorcycle engine.
Jax grabbed Leo and carried him over his shoulder, sprinting alongside Martha.
Marcus rode slowly behind them, using his motorcycle headlight to illuminate their path.
Behind them, the stone tunnel began to cave in with deafening roars.
Huge granite boulders smashed onto the path where Thomas’s body had been lying.
"The exit is right ahead!" Martha shouted, pointing to a rusty iron grate illuminated by moonlight.
Jax slammed his body against the iron grate, but it was locked with a heavy padlock.
"Get back!" Marcus called out.
Marcus raised a heavy customized revolver and fired two armor-piercing rounds into the lock.
The lock shattered into molten fragments.
Jax kicked the grate open, bursting out into the cool night air of an abandoned quarry.
Behind them, the entire tunnel entrance collapsed in a massive plume of dust and debris.
The path under the diner was completely sealed forever.
Jax collapsed on the damp grass, gasping for fresh air.
Leo sat beside him, hugging his knees and shivering in the night cold.

The sudden silence in the quarry was terrifying.
