Jax stared at the silver snail key lying in his palm.
The key felt icy cold, almost burning his skin.
"That's the master key to the high-security block," Marcus said, his synthetic jaw whirring quietly.
"Thomas kept it on him at all times."
"Which means he was planning to betray his boss tonight anyway," Martha observed.
"Everyone betrays everyone in this business," Marcus said coldly.
He looked at Jax with an unreadable expression.
"Are you coming, Jax?" Marcus asked. "Or are you going to run back to your fake life?"
Jax looked back toward the burning lights of the distant town.
He thought about his small apartment, his motorcycle, and the simple life he had tried to build.
It had all been a lie constructed on top of a buried nightmare.
"I'm coming," Jax said, his voice flat and resolute.
"But when this is over, Marcus, you and I are going to settle what happened ten years ago."
Marcus gave a short, metallic nod.
"Fair enough," Marcus said.
He turned to Martha.

"Take the boy to the safe house in the forest," Marcus instructed.
"If we aren't back by dawn, burn the house down and leave the state."
