Chapter 8 - The Secret Vault

"Put the iron rod down," Vanessa commanded coldly.
Nathan slowly dropped the fireplace poker onto the carpet.
"You've lost, Vanessa," Nathan said calmly, trying to buy time.
"The police are surrounding this entire estate right now."
Vanessa laughed softly, a bitter and cruel sound.
"The police won't get through the steel security doors in time," she replied.
"You designed this house like a fortress, remember?"
"She locked all the security shutters from the main control panel!"
Vanessa pressed the gun harder into Nathan's back.
"Open the vault in the floor," she ordered.
"The one hidden under the Persian rug."
Nathan hesitated, looking back at his terrified son.
"If I open it, you let Leo walk out of here," Nathan demanded.
"You don't negotiate with me!" Vanessa screamed, pulling the gun back to cock it.
"Open it now, or I put a bullet in his leg!"
Leo whimpered behind his tape.
"Okay! Okay! I'll open it!" Nathan shouted, kneeling down immediately.
He pulled back the expensive rug, revealing a heavy titanium vault door.
The vault required a biometric retina scan and a passcode.
Nathan leaned forward and allowed the red scanner to scan his eye.
The digital lock chimed, and a green light turned on.
"Enter the code," Vanessa instructed, leaning over his shoulder.
Nathan typed six digits into the glowing keypad.
