Chapter 3 - Shadows at the Hospital
Sirens blared through the night as the ambulance rushed to the hospital.
Nathan sat in the back, tightly holding his mother’s limp hand.
Leo sat quietly beside him, holding his father’s coat.
"Is Grandma going to be okay?" Leo asked with tears in his eyes.
"She will be, Leo. She has to be," Nathan replied, trying to stay strong.
At the hospital, doctors rushed Margaret into the emergency room.
Nathan stood outside in the hallway, pacing back and forth nervously.
A doctor came out two hours later, looking grave.
"Mr. Nathan, your mother has traces of arsenic in her bloodstream," the doctor said.
"It has been built up slowly over several months."
Nathan slammed his fist against the hard concrete wall.
"I will kill her," Nathan muttered under his breath.
He pulled out his phone and dialed the head of police.
"Chief Miller, I need an immediate arrest warrant for Vanessa Vance," Nathan demanded.
"Mr. Nathan, we just checked her registered apartment," Chief Miller replied over the phone.
"She isn't there. Her bank accounts were emptied two hours ago."
Nathan realized Vanessa had a backup plan all along.
Suddenly, the lights in the hospital hallway flickered violently.
The corridor went pitch black for three terrifying seconds.
When the emergency lights turned on, Leo was gone.
The plastic chair where Leo was sitting was completely empty.

Nathan felt his heart stop beating.
