Chapter 15 - The Flatline
"Mom!" Nathan shrieked, running to the side of the hospital bed.
Margaret lay completely motionless, her eyes closed.
The IV drip line connected to her arm was dripping a strange clear liquid.
Nathan frantically slammed his palm on the emergency nurse call button.
"Help! I need a doctor in Room 402 right now!" he screamed into the intercom.
He looked down at the heart monitor screen.
The line was completely straight and green.
Nathan began performing chest compressions with frantic force.
"Come on, Mom! Wake up! Don't leave me!" he begged, tears streaming down his face.
Suddenly, a hand reached out and grabbed Nathan’s wrist tightly.
Margaret opened her eyes, gasping loudly for air.
"Nathan... stop... you're breaking my ribs!" she wheezed weakly.
Nathan froze in place, staring at his mother in absolute shock.
"Mom? You're alive?!"
Margaret reached up and pulled a small plastic wire off her chest.
"The nurse... she tried to put something in my IV," Margaret whispered hoarsely.
"I saw her pull a syringe from her pocket while you were away."
"I pulled the heart monitor pads off my chest to make the alarm sound!"

"She panicked and ran out into the emergency stairwell just seconds ago!"
Nathan turned toward the door, his shock instantly turning into lethal determination.
