Chapter 16 - The Stairwell Hunt
Nathan bolted out of Room 402 and rushed into the concrete stairwell.
He heard the heavy echo of footsteps running down the stairs below him.
"Veronica! Or Vanessa! Stop right there!" Nathan shouted, his voice echoing violently.
He vaulted over the steel handrails, dropping down entire flights of stairs at once.
The intruder was moving fast, wearing a heavy blue medical tunic.
They reached the basement level of the hospital complex.
The heavy steel fire door slammed shut with a loud metallic bang.
Nathan kicked the door open, stepping into the dimly lit underground utility corridors.
Pipes hummed loudly with steam, making it hard to hear surrounding noises.
Nathan grabbed an adjustable steel wrench lying on a worker's tool cart.
He walked cautiously down the damp concrete hallway.
"You can't escape this time," Nathan said, his voice cold and steady.
"The police are already surrounding the entire perimeter."
A dark laughter echoed from the end of the generator room.
"You really think we care about the police, Nathan?" a voice called out.
Nathan stepped into the large generator room, illuminated by flickering yellow lights.
Standing in the center of the room was the woman in the nurse outfit.
She slowly turned around to face him.
Beside her stood another woman, wearing identical clothes and an identical wicked smirk.
