Chapter 13 - The Secret Twin
Chief Miller looked down at his police file tablet.
"We ran an urgent background check on Vanessa Vance two hours ago," the Chief said.
"Her real name isn't Vanessa Vance."
"Her legal name is Veronica Vance."
"And she has an identical twin sister named Vanessa."
Nathan felt a cold rush of adrenaline hit his entire system.
"An identical twin?" Nathan gasped.
"The woman you kicked out of the house today was Veronica," Chief Miller explained.
"The woman who kidnapped your son at the hospital was Vanessa."
"They have been swapping places throughout your entire relationship!"
Nathan remembered all the small strange details over the past year.
The sudden mood swings, the changing habits, the minor physical differences he brushed off.
It wasn't one woman playing a long game.
It was two sisters coordinating a massive, calculated heist.
"The body in the fire was likely a body brought in to fake her death," Chief Miller added.
Suddenly, Nathan’s phone chimed with a private text message.
It was a high-definition photograph sent from an encrypted server.
Nathan opened the picture and felt his breath catch in his throat.
The photo showed his mother, Margaret, sleeping in her hospital bed.
