Chapter 5 - Pier 13

The rain poured heavily over Pier 13.

Waves crashed violently against the decaying wooden pillars.

Nathan stepped out of his car, holding a waterproof briefcase.

The cold wind cut through his shirt, but he felt no physical pain.

His mind was completely consumed by fear for Leo.

"Vanessa!" Nathan called out into the dark, misty night.

"I'm here! I brought the key!"

A figure emerged from behind a stack of rusted shipping containers.

It was a tall man wearing a yellow raincoat and a heavy face mask.

It wasn't Vanessa.

"Where is she?" Nathan demanded, stepping forward.

"Where is my son?"

The man chuckled, pulling a heavy steel crowbar from his coat.

"She doesn't handle the dirty work personally, Nathan," the man grunted.

"She pays professionals like me to clean up her mess."

The man swung the crowbar directly at Nathan’s head.

Nathan ducked quickly, the iron bar missing his ear by inches.

Nathan tackled the heavy man into the wet wooden planks.

They wrestled violently in the pouring rain.

Nathan managed to punch the man across the jaw, knocking his mask loose.

Nathan gasped in shock when he recognized the man's face.

It was Mark, his family’s personal trusted driver for ten years.

"Mark?" Nathan asked in disbelief.

"Why would you do this?"

May you like

Mark wiped blood from his lip and smirked wickedly.

"Because Vanessa paid me triple what you ever did, boss."
