Chapter 5 - The Clifftop Standoff

The sports car stopped mere inches from Julian’s sedan on the edge of the abyss.
Below the bridge, jagged rocks and crashing waves waited in the dark.
Julian stepped out of his vehicle, holding a heavy metal briefcase in one hand and a flare gun in the other.
"You always were too aggressive behind the wheel, Richard," Julian shouted over the roaring wind.
"Inside this briefcase is every deed, account, and secret you've built over thirty years," Julian announced.
"Step out of the car, or I drop it into the ocean right now," Julian threatened.
Richard and Eleanor stepped out into the freezing downpour.
"Take the money, Julian," Richard said, taking a cautious step forward.
"Just tell me why you involved her mother," Richard demanded, pointing at Eleanor.
Julian laughed hysterically, his eyes wild with greed and malice.
"Her mother found out about our off-shore accounts six years ago!" Julian roared.
"She was going to expose us both!" Julian screamed back.
"I didn't expose anyone!" Eleanor shouted back, tears mixing with the rain on her face.
"My mother was an innocent accountant who trusted your family!" Eleanor cried out.
Julian smiled sinisterly as he held the briefcase over the wooden railing of the bridge.

"Innocence is a luxury for the weak," Julian sneered.
He loosened his fingers, allowing the heavy briefcase to slip into the void.
