Chapter 3 - THE HOSPITAL SIEGE

The rain pelted the windshield like relentless gunfire.

Marcus cut the headlights as he pulled into the emergency bay of St. Jude's Hospital.

He unbuckled his seatbelt and checked his service weapon.

"Stay low in the seat, Leo," Marcus instructed firmly.

"Don't move unless I tell you to."

"Promise me you won't leave me," Leo pleaded, his small hands shaking uncontrollably.

"I promise," Marcus said, looking him dead in the eye.

Marcus sprinted through the automatic doors into the brightly lit lobby.

The front desk nurse looked up, startled by his soaked appearance.

"Where is the newborn brought in by squad 4?" Marcus demanded, showing his badge.

"Pediatric ICU, third floor," she replied nervously.

Marcus didn't wait for the elevator; he took the stairs three at a time.

As he burst onto the third floor, he noticed the hallway lights flickered frantically.

The power suddenly cut out, plunging the floor into complete darkness.

Emergency red backup lights clicked on moments later with an eerie hum.

Marcus drew his gun, his boots squeaking against the polished floor.

He reached Room 304 and pushed the door open.

The nurse inside lay unconscious on the floor.

The bassinet was empty.

Marcus’s heart dropped into his stomach.

"Looking for the bastard child?" a cold voice spoke behind him.

Marcus turned to see a masked assassin holding a silenced pistol pointed at his head.

"Put the gun down, cop," the killer ordered chillingly.

"Where is the baby?" Marcus grunted through clenched teeth.

"Already on her way to the incinerator," the assassin chuckled.

Before the assassin could pull the trigger, a heavy metal fire extinguisher slammed into his head.

The killer collapsed heavily onto the floor, unconscious.

Standing behind him was Leo, holding the dented extinguisher, panting heavily.

"I told you not to leave the car!" Marcus yelled in disbelief.
