Chapter 1 - THE SHADOW OF DECEPTION
The police station quieted down as Officer Marcus cradled the shivering infant.
The young boy, Leo, wiped the muddy tear tracks from his hollow cheeks.
Every breath he drew felt like broken glass cutting through his chest

Marcus carefully handed the baby to a paramedic waiting near the doorway.
"We need to get her to the hospital immediately," the paramedic insisted softly.
Leo’s eyes flared with panic as the pink blanket vanished down the hallway.
"Wait!" Leo screamed, stumbling forward before Marcus caught his shoulder.
"Easy, son," Marcus said, his voice trembling with hidden emotion.
"You saved her life, but she needs medical care right now."
Leo gripped Marcus’s tactical vest with white-knuckle desperation.
"You don't understand!" Leo whispered loudly.
"They will come for her!"
Marcus narrowed his eyes, sensing a darker truth beneath the boy's fear.
"Who will come for her, Leo?" Marcus asked gently.
Leo looked around the bustling precinct as if shadows were watching from every corner.
"The man with the silver ring," Leo whispered.
"He threw her in the dumpster behind the abandoned mill."
"He said no one could ever know she existed."
Marcus felt a cold chill run down his spine.
The abandoned mill belonged to Mayor Vance, the town's most powerful figure.
Suddenly, the front glass doors of the precinct swung open with a loud thud.
In walked Chief Brody, accompanied by a tall man in a tailored suit wearing a prominent silver ring.
"Officer Marcus," Chief Brody barked, his voice sharp and unyielding.
"Step away from the boy immediately."
The man in the suit smiled coldly at Leo.
Leo let out a terrified gasp and shrank behind Marcus.
"That's him!" Leo shrieked.
"That's the man who discarded the baby!"
Chief Brody sneered and pulled out a set of handcuffs.
"Silence!" Brody yelled.
"This boy is a runaway from the juvenile facility, Marcus."
"He's delusional and highly dangerous."
Marcus stood his ground, placing his body firmly between the boy and his superiors.
"Chief, he brought in a freezing newborn," Marcus argued back.
"He saved a child's life tonight!"
The suited man, Richard Vance, stepped forward with chilling composure.
"The boy stole that infant from a wealthy family in the upper district," Richard stated smoothly.
"He is a kidnapper, Officer."
Leo shook his head violently, tears pouring down his filthy face.
"He's lying!" Leo screamed.
