Chapter 2 - INTO THE DARKNESS

Marcus felt his pulse race violently against his ribs.
Richard’s suave expression instantly hardened into pure malice.
"Take the boy into custody," Chief Brody ordered his officers.
Three heavy-set officers stepped forward, pulling out their batons.
"Marcus, stand down or you’ll be stripped of your badge," Brody warned.
Marcus looked down into Leo’s terrified, desperate eyes.
He remembered his own little brother who had vanished years ago under mysterious circumstances.
He couldn't let another child be swallowed by this city's corruption.
Without warning, Marcus unholstered his taser and fired directly into Chief Brody’s chest.
The chief collapsed to the floor, grunting in agonizing shock.
"Run!" Marcus yelled, grabbing Leo’s arm and dragging him toward the back exit.
"Stop them!" Richard shouted, his voice cracking with rage.
Bullets began shattering the glass windows behind them as they sprinted down the dark hallway.
Marcus kicked open the rear emergency door into the pouring rain.
They tumbled into the muddy alleyway just as the alarm sirens blared.
"Get in the car!" Marcus commanded, unlocking his unmarked cruiser.
Leo scrambled into the passenger seat, gasping for air.
Marcus slammed his foot on the accelerator, screeching out into the stormy night.
Rearview mirrors showed flashing red and blue lights instantly giving chase.
"Where are we going?" Leo sobbed, clutching his torn shirt.
"To the hospital," Marcus answered grimly.
"We have to secure that baby before Richard’s men reach her."
"They won't let her live," Leo warned, looking out the rear window.
"She’s the heir to the Vance estate."
Marcus glanced at the boy in utter shock.
"What did you just say?" Marcus demanded.
"The baby isn't trash," Leo wept softly.

"She is Richard Vance's legal daughter."
"And he tried to murder her."
