Chapter 15 - BROTHERS IN BLOOD

Marcus chuckled darkly, taking a slow step forward down the grand staircase.

"Look around you, Jax! You're outgunned, outnumbered, and running on borrowed time!" Marcus shouted.

"Give up Elena, and maybe I'll let you live out your days in a cage!"

Jax didn't waste time talking.

He unpinned a fragmentation grenade from a stolen tactical vest and tossed it around the pillar into the center of the foyer.

"Grenade!" one of the mercenaries screamed.

BOOM!

The explosion shattered the glass chandeliers overhead, sending thousands of razor-sharp crystal shards raining down upon the foyer.

Dust and heavy smoke filled the air.

Jax stepped out from behind the pillar before the dust could settle, firing precise bursts from his rifle.

Three mercenaries fell immediately, caught completely off guard by the sudden assault.

The remaining three returned blind fire through the smoke, tearing up the wooden walls and antique paintings.

Jax maneuvered through the haze like a phantom, closing the distance between them.

He vaulted over a leather sofa, driving his combat knife into the chest of a mercenary, then seized the man's weapon and used his body as a shield against incoming fire.

He dropped the fifth mercenary with two quick shots to the center mass.

Marcus, realizing his squad was wiped out in seconds, turned and sprinted toward the entrance of the underground garage.

Jax chased after him, his boots clicking heavily on the marble floor.

"Elena, stay here!" Jax yelled back over his shoulder.

Jax burst through the double doors into the underground garage, rifle raised.

The garage was dimly lit, housing rows of luxury vehicles.

A loud metallic clang echoed from behind a dark black SUV.

Jax slowly advanced, keeping his weapon raised, his eyes scanning every reflection on the polished vehicle surfaces.

"You always were the better soldier, Jax," Marcus’s voice echoed from the dark corners of the garage.

"But you never had the killer instinct required to rule."

"I never wanted to rule a empire built on blood and suffering," Jax replied, moving silently between the cars.

"I just wanted a family."

"Family makes you weak!" Marcus roared, suddenly stepping out from behind a pillar and firing his shotgun at point-blank range.
