Chapter 12 - THE BLOODLINE’S BURDEN

Elena screamed from behind the iron bars, her hands clutching the metal until her knuckles turned ghostly white.
"Jax, sign it! Just sign whatever he wants!" Elena pleaded frantically.
"Don't let him hurt Lily!"
Jax closed his eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath as the sheer weight of the trap suffocated him.
"Give me the paper," Jax whispered, opening his eyes.
Victor gestured to one of his guards, who handed Jax a pen and a thick legal folder.
With his hands cuffed in front of him, Jax signed his name on the dotted line at the bottom of each page.
Victor snatched the folder back, inspecting the signatures with a satisfied glint in his eyes.
"Very good," Victor said, slipping the folder inside his jacket.
"Now, what about my daughter?" Jax demanded. "Order your man to stand down!"
Victor turned his back on Jax, taking a step toward the exit.
"Marcus, clear the cabin," Victor ordered into his radio transmitter.
"Wait, what does 'clear' mean?!" Jax roared, struggling violently against the guards holding him down.
"Victor! What does that mean?!"
Marcus's voice came through the radio, cold and devoid of humanity.
"It means leaving no witnesses, Jax."
"NO!" Jax screamed, his voice cracking with unbearable anguish.
On the small monitor, the mercenary on the screen raised his pistol slightly.
Elena shrieked in terror, collapsing to her knees in the cell.
Before the shooter on the screen could pull the trigger, the wooden window behind him shattered into a cloud of glass and wood fragments.
A dark figure burst through the window, driving a long hunting knife deep into the mercenary's neck.
The mercenary collapsed instantly, his gun clattering onto the floorboards.
Jax and Victor both stared at the monitor in absolute shock.
The figure stood up in the cabin, wiping blood off her face.
It was Sophia, bleeding heavily from her abdominal wound, but standing upright with a smoking shotgun in her hands.
Sophia looked directly into the cabin’s hidden security camera, grabbed Lily, and pulled her out through the broken window into the dark woods.

"She... she was alive?" Victor whispered, his face turning pale with sudden rage.
Jax didn't waste a single millisecond.
