Chapter 6 - Whispers Over Whiskey

Clara kept her head down and walked slowly toward the counter.

The middle-aged waitress behind the counter eyed Clara with immediate suspicion.

Jax didn't turn around, but his eyes tracked Clara in the mirror behind the bar.

"My mother said this is you," Leo whispered softly to Jax, holding up the photo.

Jax's hand froze holding his glass of whiskey.

He slowly set the glass down onto the wooden counter.

His large, scarred fingers touched the edge of the photograph trembling slightly.

"Kid... your mother tells a lot of fairy tales," Jax growled softly.

"Jax..." the waitress whispered from behind the counter, her eyes narrowing.

"What is that photograph?"

Jax quickly covered the photograph with his large palm, trying to remain calm.

Leo looked up at him with wide, hopeful hazel eyes.

The boy slowly pulled a small, folded piece of paper from inside his jacket.

"Mom said Uncle left before I was born," Leo whispered softly.

Jax stared at the folded paper as if it were a unexploded bomb.

Suddenly, Clara stepped forward into the warm diner light.

"He isn't your uncle, Leo," Clara said, her voice shaking the silence of the room.

Jax spun around instantly, his hand reaching for his waist belt.

"Don't move!" Jax bellowed.

At that exact moment, the front glass door shattered into a million pieces.

Julian kicked the door frame open, his gun pointed straight at Jax's chest.

"Touch the boy and you die right here, Jax!" Julian roared.
