Chapter 9 - INTO THE ABYSS
Raymond looked at Leo in the rear-view mirror, a dark, desperate smile creeping onto his face.
"It's reinforced steel, kid. But the drop will kill us if the impact doesn't."
"It's better than what he'll do to us!" Lily shouted, grabbing Leo's hand tightly.
"Do it, Uncle Raymond! Do it!"
Victor raised his finger. "Fire!" he ordered coldly.
"Brace yourselves!" Raymond screamed, slamming his foot flat onto the gas pedal.
The heavy SUV roared to life, its custom engine screaming in fury.
Instead of driving toward the roadblock, Raymond swung the wheel violently into the wooden side railing of the bridge.
The heavy armored bumper smashed through the thick wooden posts like toothpick splinters.
The truck plunged nose-first into the empty night air.
Victor rushed to the edge of the broken bridge, watching in disbelief as the SUV fell into the darkness.
The heavy vehicle crashed violently into the white-water rapids of the raging river below.
A massive splash of water erupted into the dark sky, followed by total silence.
"Find the bodies!" Victor roared at his men, his composure completely shattering into pure mania.
"I want heads on my desk by morning! Do you hear me?! FIND THEM!"
Down in the icy water, the SUV was rapidly filling with freezing river fluid.
The pressure of the water kept the doors locked shut.
Leo coughed and sputtered as the water rose to his chest.
"Lily! Lily, where are you?!" Leo yelled in the pitch-black water.
"I'm stuck! My seatbelt is jammed!" she screamed back, underwater bubbles escaping her mouth.

Raymond was unconscious in the front seat, his head bleeding heavily against the steering wheel.
The truck was sinking fast to the bottom of the deep river bed.
